Raina Plowright
Why did she want to go to Antarctica?
Her interest to go to Antarctica started exactly 1 year before she went. She watched a Presentation
of the surroundings of Antarctica and realised that it was a just a magnificient place to be and
the beauty of the land just looked Fragile and untouched. The Wildlife was also magnificent and the
Wildlife and the Land combined just fitted in. She watched it in a Presentation made by a Explorer that
recently got back from the Antarctic. A year later she got offered a job as a Vet assistant in Antarctica
and so started her adventure to Antarctica.
When did they go to Antarctica and what did they Achieve?
In 1995 she went on a Spring Marine Research Voyage to Antarctica, with a round trip to Mawson
and Davis. Raina went with 2 Veterinarians to give anaesthetic to Crabeater seals, Collecting
samples and attaching Satellite Dive Recorders. Raina also helped with a population survey
of pack ice seals. She loved when she worked their because it felt like a free space with delicate
white ice and the magnificent animals and that she was there she wasn't seeing it in a presentation
anymore, she was at the magnificent place called Antarctica. So thats how her exploring started.
How have they contributed to the development of our understanding of Antarctica?
Raina Plowright has contributed to our understanding of Antarctica
wildlife and appreciation of the beauty of all of the Antarctic species.
What Challenges/Hazards did they face while they were in Antarctica?
One of the Challenges was that it was so Cold to the point that your fingers and
toes were even aching,When she was on the top deck of the boat it was really cold
so she started walking and jumping around to try and keep warm untill the people on the deck below
her came up to see what all of the commotion was, One of the Hazards were that one of the Vets hit their head
on a metal hook and nearly loss consciousness, thats when she realised how isolated they were
because it would take a while for anybody to reach them.
